ReNEW at IGARSS 2024

From 7-12 July 2024, in Athens, Greece, the ReNEW project was proudly showcased at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS). The I-SENSE group of ICCS, partners in the ReNEW consortium, presented their research results through a poster presentation titled “Evaluation of Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 MF Derived Water Levels Using In-Situ Data Over Narrow Rivers,” delivered by Stelios Kossieris during the “Inland Waters II” session.

This presentation highlighted the crucial role of the ReNEW in advancing the Inland Waterway Transport sector towards a more smart, green, sustainable, and climate-resilient future. By leveraging remote sensing technologies to monitor water levels, ReNEW significantly contributes to the sustainability of Europe’s inland waterways.

Inland water levels and their dynamic nature are vital elements of the global water cycle and land surface hydrology. They play a significant role in water resource management, biodiversity, and mitigating climate change impacts. Space-based altimetry observations, such as those from Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 MF, are critical in supplementing the often limited in-situ data.

The ICCS team evaluated the Douro and Danube rivers, employing gauge measurements to validate altimetry-derived water levels. Despite the challenges in obtaining accurate measurements over narrow rivers, they applied two outlier detection methods, Mean and Standard Deviation (MSD) and Median Absolute Deviation (MAD), to preprocess data and enhance measurement accuracy.

Thanks to our partners for demonstrating how ReNEW is driving positive change in the future of IWT!
